Abercrombie: Woven in the Blue Ridge Mountains

It started with a bold but simple vision: Breathe life back into the American textile industry. With certainty of purpose, lifelong entrepreneur John Regan, President and CEO of Abercrombie Textiles, bought the Shelby, NC company in 2007, and, without skipping a beat, acquired the Cliffside, NC-based Cone Decorative in 2011.

“I truly believed overseas suppliers couldn’t be as good of vendors to the American home furnishings market as a strong domestic mill,” Regan recalls. “The last eight years, and especially the last three or four, have shown that to be true.”

Chip Stroup, who recently joined Abercrombie as President of Residential Fabrics, echoes Regan’s statement: “We can have samples for customers within days and final product in weeks.” Abercrombie’s product offering is highly engineered and high style, with a degree of bulk and texture common to European-designed textiles, yet at a price point that is 20-30% less. “We purchase yarns domestically, and mix them to create textiles unlike anything else.”

Regan and his team have consolidated Abercrombie all into one facility in Cliffside, NC. With high-speed jacquard looms capable of weaving up to 140 inches wide, Abercrombie has expanded their product offering to include not only great product for upholstered goods, but also for top-of-bed and drapery.

“We have no parent company, so the direction and future of our company rests in my hands and those of our management team,” Regan explains. “As such we are highly responsive to our customers’ needs.”

“As we continue investing in equipment into next year” Regan says “our customers are going to be pleasantly reminded just how valuable a vertically integrated domestic mill is to the American home furnishings market.”
